Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has dismissed speculation linking Max Verstappen with a move to McLaren, while reaffirming his long-term commitment to the British team despite a challenging start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Norris admitted McLaren has fallen short of expectations but remains confident the team can return to winning ways.

The reigning champion attributed McLaren’s struggles to reliability problems, strategic setbacks and the extended development of its 2025 championship-winning car, which reduced preparation time for Formula 1’s new technical regulations.

    Is Max Verstappen Joining McLaren?

Lando Norris played down rumours suggesting Max Verstappen could join McLaren in the future.

Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix, Norris said he would welcome racing alongside any of Formula 1’s elite drivers, including Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, because competing against the best provides the ultimate benchmark.

He also praised current teammate Oscar Piastri, describing him as an exceptional competitor who continues to push him every race weekend.

Why Is McLaren Struggling in the 2026 F1 Season?

According to Norris, McLaren’s difficult title defence stems largely from its successful 2025 campaign.

The team continued developing last year’s championship-winning car deep into the season while battling for both the Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship.

As a result, McLaren had less development time than several rivals before Formula 1 introduced new regulations for the 2026 season.

Norris believes that disadvantage has contributed significantly to the team’s current position.

Reliability Problems Have Cost McLaren Valuable Points

Norris identified reliability as McLaren’s biggest challenge this season.

Although the car has demonstrated competitive pace on multiple occasions, recurring mechanical problems and retirements have prevented the team from maximizing its results.

He also pointed to the Miami Grand Prix, where strategic decisions denied McLaren an opportunity to convert strong pace into victory.

Norris Still Believes Podiums Are Within Reach

Despite sitting fifth in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, Norris remains optimistic.

The British driver believes McLaren possesses enough pace to compete for podium finishes when race weekends unfold without technical issues or strategic mistakes.

He remains confident the team’s performance will improve as development continues throughout the season.

Lando Norris Reaffirms His Commitment to McLaren

Norris made it clear he has no intention of leaving McLaren despite the team’s recent struggles.

He explained that while every Formula 1 driver wants to race in the fastest car, enjoying the working environment and trusting the people around him are equally important.

Norris said he would rather remain with a team that values him than pursue a move solely for a marginally better opportunity elsewhere.

He even suggested he could spend his entire Formula 1 career with McLaren, praising the team for giving him his first opportunity in the sport.

Silverstone Remains the Season’s Most Special Race

Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix, Norris acknowledged that another victory at Silverstone would require both strong performance and good fortune.

Competing in front of his home supporters remains the highlight of the Formula 1 calendar for the defending world champion, who hopes to deliver another memorable result despite McLaren’s challenging campaign.

    McLaren Focused on Recovery

Although McLaren’s title defence has proven far more difficult than expected, Norris remains convinced the team has the talent and determination to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid.

By addressing reliability issues and continuing development under the new regulations, McLaren hopes to close the gap to its championship rivals during the remainder of the 2026 season.
